Electric Mobility in Commercial Bus & Truck segment is witnessing a positivity across the world market. I hope India will also adapt to electric mobility on a large scale very soon. As the hype on zero-emission is catching up, electric trucks are bound to intensify in our country in the next 2-3 year. Volvo plans to make his debut in North America and Europian markets in 2020. Worldwide Medium & Heavy duty truck segment is an integral part of the freight transport industry. India is no different from this. E-mobility of trucks is expected to happen in this segment in the first phase.
Some good work in this direction is already up by the startups. Rhino 5536 is reported to be India’s first fully build an ingenious electric truck. It is a 60 Tonner heavy-duty truck and is developed by Gurgaon based IPTL ( Infra Prime Logistics Technologies). The truck is powered y 275 KW lithium-ion battery and can go up to 200km (in Loaded condition) in a single charge. Without load, the truck can travel up to 400 km. The truck can run at a top speed of 90km/hr and the powerful battery takes 90 minutes to charge. The electric motor used in the truck gives an output of 483 BHP .BEML has also successfully developed an electric dump truck BH 205 and is running it successfully on its mining sites.
Some of the benefits of e-trucks are as under
- 20% Higher gradeability than the diesel engine.
- Zero Pollution.
- Less disturbing noise.
- Faster ride and handling response .
- Smooth Gearing.
- Increase in driving comfort by 10 folds
- Significant reduction in operating Cost @ Rs 10/Km in e -truck as compared to Rs 30/km in traditional diesel trucks.
- Electric Trucks are expected from road tax in India.
The overall benefits of e-trucks are immense. Replacing one electric truck with diesel trucks saves 50,000 to 60,000 diesel annually. The Operation of one e-truck reduces the pollution significantly as per estimate it is equivalent to planting 5000 trees. It also cut down the operating cost by 80% and increases the margins by 30-40%.
e-trucks mobilisation in India needs the support of two big components one is the cost-effective supply of batteries and second is the third generation of Truck Radial Tyres ( to save the energy losses through the power train). According to Benchmark Minerals Lithium-ion Battery Megafactory, December 2019 assessment china is the powerhouse with nearly 70% of the global capacity so supplies from china will hep in constant supply with competitive prices. Aeolus third generation of radial tyres are now in the market and will help customers in go green go electric up-gradation.
